Black Voices and Personal Choices: A Celebration for Black History Month

Voyagers Toastmasters will celebrate Black History Month at their February 17, 2022 online meeting with a showcase of four experienced speakers presenting their unique perspective and knowledge of African American history.

You are invited. All are welcome, all ages. You don’t have to be a Toastmaster.

This event will be conducted via Zoom, and will entertain, inspire, inform, and move attendees with stories of personal and historic events of and by African Americans. Each speaker will demonstrate skills they have learned from Toastmaster participation, and each will present a different aspect of African American culture.

Attendees will also learn about the benefits of public speaking skills learned from Toastmaster attendance and participation.

Speakers include:

Dr. Angelique Hood, a graduate of Spelman College, a Historic Black College and University (HBCU), will present the talk “Education: The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste”, discussing the evolution of education to overcome racism. Dr. Hood comes from a family of educators and holds two Ph.D.s, in education and organizational development.

Patrick Locke, a retired regional manager of a large construction company who resides in the Pacific Northwest. He has four times earned the highest award conferred by Toastmasters International, Distinguished Toastmaster. Patrick will share his personal story and personal choices his family made, that he learned about in 2001…that his family heritage was predominately African and Cherokee. His parents had gone “underground” because they could cross the color barrier and maintained a family secret for over fifty years

Johanna Brown, speaking about Kizzmekia Corbett, Scientist and Mentor. Though her mentor’s coaching Ms. Corbett, a high school student, learned that becoming a scientist was an attainable goal. Since then, she has lived the mentoring philosophy “each one, teach one”.

Angela Kanish, with an MBA in Arts Administration from Binghamton University has worked with the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, The Old Globe Theatre, and San Diego Opera. She will share her personal journey as a participant in the Scarsdale Student Transfer Education Plan, which forever changed the course of her life.

Voyagers Toastmasters Club Debates Three State Propositions

Date: November 1 – Time: 7:00 – 8:30 AM
Place: Friendship Hall at University Christian Church, 3900 Cleveland Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103

Voyagers Toastmasters (located in the Hillcrest – Normal Heights area of San Diego) announces a special program targeted to local politics. Helping voters understand the issues, just days before the actual election, Voyagers will be examining three of the most critical state propositions – Prop 6, 8 and 10. Gas Tax, Dialysis Pricing, and Rent Control.

This will be fun as we examine what exactly these propositions are all about and discuss their pros and cons, especially how they affect you.

Free and open to all in the community, this special program will feature some of our club’s top speakers. And since this is a 7 AM meeting we always have free coffee and snacks!

This program is a great introduction to Toastmasters, the international non-profit organization known as the best place for public speaking and leadership training.

To reserve your spot, or for more details about this special program, please contact: Safwan Ahmed – Vice President of Membership – at (682) 234-1656 or online at hal@halslater.com

July 12 Meeting – all about the movies

What was your all-time favorite summer blockbuster movie?

This was the especially engaging theme of the July 12, 2018 meeting hosted by Toastmaster Mark S. We could all remember chillin’ out with a great movie on a long summer day. Chill, by the way, was the Word of the Day.

Table topics were very creative with Toastmasters presenting script ideas, each one building and expanding on the previous idea.

Cynthia P took the Best Table Topics award for her animated delivery of her script idea with scary celery and rubber chicken in outer space! For our prepared speeches,

Meredith C told us about her love/hate relationship with her home town of Tyler, Texas and Lynn S encouraged us to stop using environmentally unfriendly plastic straws.

Winners this week:
Table Topics: Cynthia P
Most Improved: Meredith C
Best Evaluator: John W
Best Speaker: Lynn S
Huggie: Safwan M

Voyagers Toastmasters – June 28 Meeting

Voyagers Toastmasters – June 28 Meeting

We had a very exciting and action packed meeting. No, we didn’t get attacked by dinosaurs or have a volcano vent explode under our meeting location, but we did welcome in our new Board of Officers. Weeeee.

Mark S as VP PR, Mark I as Sergeant of Arms, Safwan as VP Membership, John W as Treasurer, Maria F as VP of Membership.. and drum roll please, Hal as a President.

With this line up of officers, we will be having some dynamic and maybe even controversial meetings!

The June meeting had some wonderful high spots – Maria F got her CTM – Competent Toastmaster – we knew she was good but now its official.

June 14th – Are You Ready for the Truth?

Vpoyagers Winners - June 14, 2018
What happened on June 14, 2018 – Voyagers Toastmasters

The Truth and Nothing But the Truth was the theme on 6/14/18 picked by our Toastmaster, Rene R.

This made for some interesting Table Topics on questions such as, “Is it acceptable to tell white lies to avoid offending people?”

We learned more about Angelique H as she gave her Pathways Icebreaker speech.

Maggy B delivered a speech entitled, The Wonder Women, where we were educated on the tireless efforts of the hard-working women’s group.

Mark I’s speech was emotional and heartfelt as he described the firefighters who granted a young boy’s dying wish.

Winners this week:
Table Topics: Joe
Most Improved: Maggy
Best Evaluator: Mark S
Best Speaker: Mark I
