We had a great meeting – This is what you missed

Jerry Marino gave us several interesting and unique things to do in San Diego this weekend to say farewell to Summer at our Aug. 29 meeting. Highlights were the speeches delivered by Rod Hamby (Bad is Good), Angelique Hood (Inside the Dream), and Amy Gilstrap (The Effective Salesperson). Rod Hamby was voted Best Speaker, Diana Bergman – Best Topics, and Hal Slater – Best Evaluator! We had several guests (remember, we need more members!) and it was an interesting way to say farewell to the pseudo end of summer.

News of Note:

Our Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contests are next Thursday, Sept. 5. If you are not participating please attend to help out with functionary duties and provide an exciting audience for the speakers.

We will begin a Speechcraft training for new and prospective members starting Oct. 3. More to come on that.

Semi-annual dues are now due (is that redundant?). They are $63 for club and Toastmasters International, $65 if paid by credit or debit card. You can pay at our meetings or send your dues to 1160 Hunter Stree, San Diego, CA 92103.

Voyagers 2013 Summer Party

Diana Hussey set up and coordinated the Voyagers Toastmasters Summer Party at Olivewood Gardens. This is a very cool and interesting facility. Kudos to Diana for making this happen. We ate, we drank, we stumbled around and we played games. And, there were a herd of little potential Voyagers enjoying the party, the sunshine and the gardens.

Diana said –

Thanks to everyone who attended the Summer Picnic this year! The food was delicious, the garden was blooming, the weather was fantastic, and the people were stellar! We are sorry that not everyone was able to attend.

Mark E entertained our small flock of kids with an awesome story about “Looks Funny”, an eagle raised by bunnies! Trisha, Jane F, and Justin all pitched in to lead a Water Balloon toss and the Dizzy Bat Race. We finished off by taking a very informal tour of Olivewood Gardens.

All in all, not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon. It was great to see some former members too – Sally, Daniel, Marco, and Laurie! In addition to those already mentioned above, special gratitude to those who helped with party ideas, set-up, clean-up, etc. – Teresa, Kimberly, Hal, Beth, Jan, Mark S, and Donna. Voyagers rocks!

This is your chance to meet Darren and find out a little of what it takes to become a World Champion speaker. In addition, you will have a chance to hear Mark Epstein as he delivers his local award winning contest speech… then be “evaluated” by Darren… helping him improve on his journey to the world title in August.

Since that victory, Darren has traveled the globe demystifying the process of creating a powerful speech. He has roused audiences in faraway places like Saudi Arabia, China, Oman, Malaysia, and Taiwan with his inspirational journey from first-rate chump to first-class champ, proving anything is possible if you are willing to work for it.

Darren is known as the person who helps speakers launch their careers in professional speaking. Business people and entrepreneurs can improve their presentation and business communication & leadership skills – without charge

Today, Voyagers Toastmasters, one of the most dynamic and most experienced Toastmaster Clubs in San Diego, announces the new and innovative Executive Speech Evaluation program which makes it easy for business and organization professionals and leaders to participate in the Toastmaster program.

Toastmasters is not just about improving public speaking skills – it is also about improving business leadership, communication, networking and meeting management skills.

The San Diego Voyagers Club, based in Old Town, near to Mission Valley, UTC, beaches and downtown, is inviting local business and organizational leaders to have a “Taste of Toastmasters”.

They are invited to come in and practice their business presentation, their pitch for funding, their motivational speech for their staff and members, etc. In addition, they will have the opportunity to have their 6 to 10 minute presentation reviewed by a team of experienced Toastmaster evaluators.

This is a great opportunity for organization leaders who need a little polish on their presentations. For managers who recognize that someone on their team needs some help, this is the training program that they have been waiting for. This is a wonderful opportunity for entrepreneurs to sharpen their pitch. Voyagers can provide a professional, outsider look at a speech and provide valuable suggestions to ensure successful communications.

Mark Epstein, long time member and recent President of Voyagers Toastmasters– one of San Diego’s most dynamic and experienced Toastmaster Cubs, was crowned the winner of the Area 12 Toastmaster International Speech Contest that was held March 16, 2013.

It was a tough contest, with lots of great speeches, but Mark Epstein made Voyagers proud as his speech took first place.  His touching and poignant speech about his sister grabbed the audience’s hearts and the speech judges’ ballots. He will be representing Voyagers and Area 12 at the upcoming Southern Division contest on May 5, 2013 to be held at Solar Turbines, downtown San Diego.
