News Update – Jerry Marino – VP of Education

I’d tell you what a wonderful meeting we had on Thursday, Nov 14, ToastmastersLogo-Colorbut I don’t have time because I’m heading out of town for a reunion weekend in Boston. I could tell you what a great job our TM Diana Bergman did with the theme of “The Frost is on the Pumpkin”, or what great speeches Kevin Swanson, Felicia Douglis, and Hal Slater gave…or how good the feedback was from evaluators Jane Flaherty, Suzi O’Brien, and Beth Bateman, or that we had six guests, an Area Governor visit, earned a Golden Gavel for our excellent meeting, and that we had three first timers as functionaries…but I don’t have time.

Dates: Dec. 5 30th Anniversary meeting; Dec. 15, in the evening, Holiday Party and Anniversary Celebration.

Welcome new member James (I don’t know his last name because I don’t have your paperwork). Nice to have you a Voyager. If anyone has James’s email please forward this to him until I get him on the club roster.

See you for “Marketing the Voyagers Experience” next week led by Professor Alan Hoffmanner and attended by his MBA class who will prepare a marketing plan for Voyagers as a class project.

What a great meeting on Thursday. As promised, professional speaker and Voyager member Sheryl Roush gave a great speech and showed us The Heart of a Toastmaster…especially a Voyager Toastmaster. Sheryl recounted her start-to-finish story of how she delivered her first speech in tears to her current success as a professional speaker, author, and mentor. Since that first terrifying Ice Breaker Sheryl has delivered over 3,000 speeches in ten different countries and become a published author in the process. The message of Sheryl’s speech was to participate actively in Toastmasters because as our dear Helen Blanchard said “If you get everything out of Toastmasters that you can, you’ll never get out of Toastmasters”.

And what great performances from our speechcrafters. Accomplished icebreakers from Carmen Yu and Alaina Lockwood and excellent evaluation by Sarah Deems. In addition Mary Porter graced us with her presence and don’t you know she won Table Topics. What a motivating and inspiring meeting all around.

Speechcraft included the presence of many veteran (“old”) Toastmasters including Mary Porter, Jerry Marino and Terry Hewins – part of the team that originally created Voyagers and have guided it it through its ups and downs. Joining them are Sheryl Roush, Jim Tucker and Teresa Kuffel

There are still a few who haven’t paid their dues and renewed their TM membership. Please take care of that now. They are $63 for club and Toastmasters International, $65 if paid by credit or debit card. You can pay at next meeting or send your dues to 1160 Hunter Street, San Diego, CA 92103.

Welcome new member Sarah Deems!

We have our final Speechcraft session this coming week. Mike Ruthenberg is giving an educational presentation on “Your Body Speaks – Presentation Gestures and Movement” and more icebreakers and evaluations by speechcrafters!

See you Thursday for speechcraft “graduation”.

Oct 17 – Toastmasters Voyagers – Speechcraft #3

SherylJimTucker– Wow, an incredible meeting. Overflowing with barely enough enough seats to go around. Sheryl Roush gave a wonderfully inspiring and educational speech about the value of Toastmasters and how it helped her become a successful entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker. She was so good she even got Jim Tucker, three-time World Champion of Public Speaking finalist, to buy one of her books!

Sept 26 Meeting – what happened

Jerry Marino says –

Three super speeches (if I do say so myself) at our Thursday meeting this week: Mark Epstein told us what it’s like to be an area governor; Jan Campagna gave us more than we want to know (according to her) about safe driving programs; and our VPE Jerry Marino gave us a trip through the upcoming SpeechCraft program starting next week, Oct. 3.

As you know our SpeechCraft chair is Trisha Landoni.

We need more speechcrafters. Tell your friends.

SpeechCraft cost is $36 and that includes a manual, materials, and the weekly meeting fee. And a special discount on membership if SpeechCrafters join the club during the program. And on Oct. 17 we have professional speaker, Accredited Speaker, and author of “The Heart of a Toastmaster” Sheryl Roush presenting at our club. You really don’t want to miss that talk. Sheryl started like everyone else as a Voyager new member and look at all she has achieved in her speaking and publishing world. What a deal!

Semi-annual dues are now due (is that redundant?). They are $63 for club and Toastmasters International, $65 if paid by credit or debit card. They need to be in by Oct 1 so if you haven’t paid yet you are late. You can pay at next meeting or send your dues to 1160 Hunter Street, San Diego, CA 92103. It’s important we renew on time to achieve that objective for our club leadership program. We were a President’s Distinguished Club last year, achieving all 10 goals, and we wouldn’t want to miss an objective because we were late on dues.

I’ve tried to accommodate everyone’s schedule that has informed me of their availability and desire to speak. If you have a request let me know. For the next few weeks we’ll be concentrating on educational talks and SpeechCrafters, but that includes new members participating in SpeechCraft. Here are assignments for the upcoming weeks. We will fill in SpeechCrafter names as we schedule those meetings. See you Thursday…and bring a guest!

September 19 Meeting – One of the best ever!

John Wissenberg AKA Teresa Kuffel
John Wissenberg AKA Teresa Kuffel

You missed a wild and crazy meeting. Suzi O’Brien was the Toastmaster and she gave us her interpretation of Carpe Diem. We had formal speeches by our guest, and by the marks – Mark Shapiro and Mark Imhoff. The highlight of the meeting was Teresa Kuffel doing Table topics. Well Teresa couldn’t make it so returning member John Wissenberg steppe din and gave us his rendition of Teresa doing Table Topics. The scary part was how comfortable he looked in those high heels!
