MidTown – Hillcrest based, Voyagers Toastmasters announces their annual speech contests which feature the best speakers in the club going at it, no holds barred, battling for the right to be the club’s Best Speaker – or at least, to be the Funniest Speaker.

In addition to being fun, exciting and occasionally dramatic, these Speech Contests are a great introduction to Toastmasters, the international organization for communication and leadership training.

For more details regarding how Voyagers Toastmasters works attend this, or another, of our meetings, please contact Jerry Marino – Vice President of Membership – at 619 627-1499 or online at jerrymarino@hotmail.com
An active club of an international, non-profit organization, Voyagers Toastmasters is an excellent resource for those who want to be more involved in their community and who want to learn how to develop, create and present powerful communication messages – using the power of words as well as technology. Voyagers trains members in the use of onscreen presentations, web meetings, and use of social media for communications. Their motto is “Making communications technology easy!” Companies and organizations often sponsor their staff to attend Toastmaster meetings in order to improve their communication, managerial, customer service and sales skills.

February 5, 2015: President’s Report

Our February 5th meeting was exciting for more than one reason. First, we were all delighted to have returning Toastmaster Kara D join us. It’s good to have you back! Secondly, Kara joined us in time for Voyagers’ entry into the 2015 Toastmasters International speech contests. In addition to this, John S acted as Master of Ceremony / Toastmaster and the newly retired Donna G was Chief Judge for this special contest meeting.

Everyone there was witness as some of our best speakers competed in Table Topics and Public Speaking. For Table Topics we heard Mike R, Natalie M, Mark I, and Mark S discuss favorite teachers from their life and lessons learned. We then entered the prepared speech contest where Diana B spoke on “Light from the Darkness”, Alan H spoke on “Manage Your Paradoxes to Better Manage your Life”, and Mark I spoke on “A Pilot’s Pilot”. There was too much good material presented and I spent much of my time writing down quotes from each of the speakers.

Continuing on at the next level, the combine Area 12 and Area 21 contest will be held the evening of Friday, 06 March, at the CalTrans building at 4050 Taylor Street, Building 2, San Diego, CA 92110 (just down the street from us). For Table Topics, Mark I and Mike R will represent Voyagers at the Area 12 contest. But the night won’t over for Mr. I as he continues on in the Toastmasters International World Championship of Public Speaking.

These contests have always been an excellent way for speakers to experience new ways to challenge themselves and the audience to see members strive to be their best. My thanks to all contestants and other participants for sharing with the other members of the club.

For the next meeting our returning member Kara D will be thrust into the limelight with the theme of “Shine”. Check your schedule to see if you have a role. As a warning to all members, the following week Joji P is considering having a “White Day” theme. If you are not familiar with it, you will have to look it up on Wikipedia.

We had a great meeting – This is what you missed

Jerry Marino gave us several interesting and unique things to do in San Diego this weekend to say farewell to Summer at our Aug. 29 meeting. Highlights were the speeches delivered by Rod Hamby (Bad is Good), Angelique Hood (Inside the Dream), and Amy Gilstrap (The Effective Salesperson). Rod Hamby was voted Best Speaker, Diana Bergman – Best Topics, and Hal Slater – Best Evaluator! We had several guests (remember, we need more members!) and it was an interesting way to say farewell to the pseudo end of summer.

News of Note:

Our Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contests are next Thursday, Sept. 5. If you are not participating please attend to help out with functionary duties and provide an exciting audience for the speakers.

We will begin a Speechcraft training for new and prospective members starting Oct. 3. More to come on that.
