Why Join Toastmasters – Improve your communication and leadership skills

Everyone in a Toastmasters meeting was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced program allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment.

A typical club has between 20 to 40 members who meet either weekly, biweekly or monthly. An evening meeting normally lasts around 90- 120 minutes.

(Voyagers Toastmasters meets once a week for an hour and a half. Once a month we meet in the real world – hybrid meeting. The rest of the time via zoom)
There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations, pointing out the strengths and suggesting improvements. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Members also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop their leadership skills.

We learn through the Toastmasters Pathways learning experience, an exciting, flexible and interactive way to develop your skills and help others in your club develop theirs. Pathways helps you learn communication and leadership skills that you need to succeed. It gives you:

The opportunity to build up to 300 unique competencies
10 specialized learning paths to choose from
Online content, so that you can learn anytime, anywhere
Real-world, transferable skills
One thing that you’ll love at Toastmasters meetings is the applause. At first. you’ll be applauded for your effort; later you’ll be applauded for your skill.

Black Voices and Personal Choices: A Celebration for Black History Month

Voyagers Toastmasters will celebrate Black History Month at their February 17, 2022 online meeting with a showcase of four experienced speakers presenting their unique perspective and knowledge of African American history.

You are invited. All are welcome, all ages. You don’t have to be a Toastmaster.

This event will be conducted via Zoom, and will entertain, inspire, inform, and move attendees with stories of personal and historic events of and by African Americans. Each speaker will demonstrate skills they have learned from Toastmaster participation, and each will present a different aspect of African American culture.

Attendees will also learn about the benefits of public speaking skills learned from Toastmaster attendance and participation.

Speakers include:

Dr. Angelique Hood, a graduate of Spelman College, a Historic Black College and University (HBCU), will present the talk “Education: The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste”, discussing the evolution of education to overcome racism. Dr. Hood comes from a family of educators and holds two Ph.D.s, in education and organizational development.

Patrick Locke, a retired regional manager of a large construction company who resides in the Pacific Northwest. He has four times earned the highest award conferred by Toastmasters International, Distinguished Toastmaster. Patrick will share his personal story and personal choices his family made, that he learned about in 2001…that his family heritage was predominately African and Cherokee. His parents had gone “underground” because they could cross the color barrier and maintained a family secret for over fifty years

Johanna Brown, speaking about Kizzmekia Corbett, Scientist and Mentor. Though her mentor’s coaching Ms. Corbett, a high school student, learned that becoming a scientist was an attainable goal. Since then, she has lived the mentoring philosophy “each one, teach one”.

Angela Kanish, with an MBA in Arts Administration from Binghamton University has worked with the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, The Old Globe Theatre, and San Diego Opera. She will share her personal journey as a participant in the Scarsdale Student Transfer Education Plan, which forever changed the course of her life.

Aug 23 Meeting – Green Eggs and Ham via Chandler

Have you ever tried Green Eggs and Ham? Dr Seuss would urge you to try it, advocate that he was for trying new and scary things. The same could be said for Toastmasters, but don’t worry, our Thursday meeting wasn’t scary at all. Just great fellowship and learning.

Our Toastmaster Chandler led us in the theme of Dr. Seuss, which took us back to our childhood and reminded us of characters such as the Cat in the Hat, The Lorax and Horton the Elephant.

Our Grammarian, Maria, presented the word of the day, egregious, which gave us all a healthy opportunity to kvetch a little bit.

Table Topics, led by Tim S, was a festival of Dr Seuss references and teed up questions that kept our dear respondents quick on their feet. Lynn took top prize in Table Topics for her mouthwatering description of the best breakfast other than green eggs and ham.

In the prepared speeches, Rene made us laugh as he recounted all the times in his life he accidentally started fires, Mark S brought us up to speed on how to use your leadership style to be a better coach, and Karen gave us a touching tribute to her mother.

We’re sad to see this meeting end but as Seuss himself said, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”. See you next week, Voyagers, enjoy your week, and think and wonder, wonder and think!
