“Never be afraid to ask for help”

“Never be afraid to ask for help”

Introduction: “Safwan will be delivering a level 2 speech from the strategic relationships path, project number 3 – ”Introduction to Toastmasters mentoring”. He will be talking about his life impacting mentors who helped him to be where he is now.”

Strategic Relationships

This path helps you build your skills as a leader in communication. The projects on this path focus on understanding diversity, building personal and/or professional connections with a variety of people and developing a public relations strategy. Communicating well interpersonally and as a public speaker is emphasized in each project. The path culminates in a project to apply your skills as a leader in a volunteer organization.

When you think of the relationships in your life, you’ll probably think about parents, siblings, maybe teachers or bosses that had a positive impact in your life. There might also be people who had a negative impact – bullies or the mean old guy who lived down the street who shook his cane at you and told you to get off his lawn.

How many of those people were in your life because you wanted them?

We do get to make choices about some of the people in our lives – our friends, our spouses or significant others, and our mentors.

Toastmasters Mentoring

In Toastmasters, the emphasis on mentorship has become a major component of Pathways. The classic program had some information about mentorships and encouraged them, but not like we’ve got now. Whereas it was almost optional – and many clubs didn’t have any organized program – now mentoring is vital.

Because Toastmasters is based on a very practical program – and by that, I mean you’re going to work, not just study the theory or philosophy of communication – and we don’t have instructors – we learn from the work that our peers do. It’s relational and demonstrative… it’s the difference between a class and a club. This is the basis for the push to build more mentor/protege relationships in the clubs.

The material in the Pathways Base Camp explains a lot of the mentor/protege relationship. You may be assigned a mentor. You might be asked if there is someone you would like to be your mentor. I think the point is that you have a mentor who can

show you the TM meeting ropes

encourage you to give your first 3 speeches

help you fill club meeting roles

comment on your speeches or

be your first evaluator.

Why Join Toastmasters – Improve your communication and leadership skills

Everyone in a Toastmasters meeting was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced program allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment.

A typical club has between 20 to 40 members who meet either weekly, biweekly or monthly. An evening meeting normally lasts around 90- 120 minutes.

(Voyagers Toastmasters meets once a week for an hour and a half. Once a month we meet in the real world – hybrid meeting. The rest of the time via zoom)
There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations, pointing out the strengths and suggesting improvements. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Members also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop their leadership skills.

We learn through the Toastmasters Pathways learning experience, an exciting, flexible and interactive way to develop your skills and help others in your club develop theirs. Pathways helps you learn communication and leadership skills that you need to succeed. It gives you:

The opportunity to build up to 300 unique competencies
10 specialized learning paths to choose from
Online content, so that you can learn anytime, anywhere
Real-world, transferable skills
One thing that you’ll love at Toastmasters meetings is the applause. At first. you’ll be applauded for your effort; later you’ll be applauded for your skill.

Black Voices and Personal Choices: A Celebration for Black History Month

Voyagers Toastmasters will celebrate Black History Month at their February 17, 2022 online meeting with a showcase of four experienced speakers presenting their unique perspective and knowledge of African American history.

You are invited. All are welcome, all ages. You don’t have to be a Toastmaster.

This event will be conducted via Zoom, and will entertain, inspire, inform, and move attendees with stories of personal and historic events of and by African Americans. Each speaker will demonstrate skills they have learned from Toastmaster participation, and each will present a different aspect of African American culture.

Attendees will also learn about the benefits of public speaking skills learned from Toastmaster attendance and participation.

Speakers include:

Dr. Angelique Hood, a graduate of Spelman College, a Historic Black College and University (HBCU), will present the talk “Education: The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste”, discussing the evolution of education to overcome racism. Dr. Hood comes from a family of educators and holds two Ph.D.s, in education and organizational development.

Patrick Locke, a retired regional manager of a large construction company who resides in the Pacific Northwest. He has four times earned the highest award conferred by Toastmasters International, Distinguished Toastmaster. Patrick will share his personal story and personal choices his family made, that he learned about in 2001…that his family heritage was predominately African and Cherokee. His parents had gone “underground” because they could cross the color barrier and maintained a family secret for over fifty years

Johanna Brown, speaking about Kizzmekia Corbett, Scientist and Mentor. Though her mentor’s coaching Ms. Corbett, a high school student, learned that becoming a scientist was an attainable goal. Since then, she has lived the mentoring philosophy “each one, teach one”.

Angela Kanish, with an MBA in Arts Administration from Binghamton University has worked with the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, The Old Globe Theatre, and San Diego Opera. She will share her personal journey as a participant in the Scarsdale Student Transfer Education Plan, which forever changed the course of her life.
